Me too

Me too, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

For the most part Gibson isn't terribly jealous of the attention we give Oliver, but sometimes he likes to get in on the act. For instance if I put Oliver down for tummy time Gibson wants to lay on the mat with him. He does the same when I lay Ollie down in his sensory gym. And he recently started saying 'me too'.

he called it a choochoo

he called it a choochoo, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

He calls a lot of things by the sounds they make.... And sometimes associates some stuff with other things. For instance all tunnels are 'choochoos' because trains go in tunnels. And all trains are 'choochoos'. Anything that flies is called 'whoosh', so airplanes, rocket ships, super heroes.... all 'whoosh'. All birds are 'bacaw' and so on.

Oh! Autumn!

Afternoon at the playground, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.
Gibson has officially moved out of his crib for good and into his toddler bed. We had gotten the toddler bed set up in his room before Oliver was born, and started the transition then, hoping to ease him out of the crib so by the time Oliver was ready to move into the crib, Gibson would be well out it and used to his bed. About 2 weeks ago we stopped using the crib at night (we'd used the bed for his single daily nap, but preferred to use the crib at night mostly so we could sleep without worrying about his getting up and wandering in the middle of the night, but he sleeps soundly usually so it was the adults hanging onto him using the crib, not him). That's pretty big, I think. Otherwise there's little to report. Things are fairly quiet with us.

Gibson is a good big brother, and Oliver is doing well, growing and thriving and getting super big. We'll have a website set up for him soon. We'll have a checkup for Gibson next month so we'll all get to see how big and tall he's getting.

I know we're heading into the holiday season... For the early shoppers Gibson does have a wish list online at amazon.com. But there is nothing he needs desperately, and there aren't any big ticket items that are on there. He has a room full of toys and a closet full of clothes. So there's no need to go crazy.

My parents finally got electricity back to their house after Hurricane Sandy knocked it out (though they were out of town for 2 weeks, so it wasn't a as major an inconvenience as it could have been- they only had to deal with no power for 3 days.... ) Our hearts are still made heavier by the ongoing power outages and people struggling with so much destruction in the communities surrounding ours.

We hope that you're doing well.

My little monster

My little monster, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.
What a week it's been! First off, we are incredibly fortunate to have weathered Hurricane Sandy without any major problems. I hesitate to say that we haven't even had any minor problems, because it seems to be in poor taste to say such a thing when I am surrounded by communities that have not had such luck. But we never so much as lost power or internet, and Todd has been able to work from home all week. We almost ran out of milk for our coffee and that my friends is almost an inconvenience rather than a problem. I am not gloating, I only write that to reassure our far flung family and friends - and let them know exactly how OK we are- especially compared to so many who are NOT OK. As a friend said this morning "Lots of good karma up for grabs. Get out there and get some! Chances are if you're reading this, you've got it better than most do right now. Time to pay it forward!"**

Happy not- hurricane related Gibson update:
As my immediate area of Brooklyn was largely untouched by Sandy, Halloween went on as normal- and Gibson finally got to don a costume and try his hand at trick-or-treating. Trick-or-treat was a little too much for him to say, but 'Boo'! worked wonders and he had a blast going from door to door and shop to shop. Considering that we really only walked 5 blocks to a Walgreens (to pick up more diapers) and the 5 blocks back- he made out pretty well with a bucket full of candy and treats.

**If you are local in Brooklyn and can donate time check out this link: Where to volunteer this weekend.

If you don't have the time (it happens, I don't, not with a 2 year old and a 2 month old who needs to nurse every couple hours) you can donate things:  People are in desperate need of cleaning supplies, large garbage bags, rubber gloves, batteries, flashlights, and winter accessories like hats scarves and gloves (most places I've been following say they are pretty good on clothing and shoes). If you want to know where you can locally drop these things off message me, or comment here and I'll find out for you.

If you want to donate money there's always the red cross, or the Mayors Fund to Advance NYC (100% of the proceeds are going to hurricane Sandy relief)

And if you're into animals (Hey, I sometimes prefer the company of animals to people too. They can be so much more civilized sometimes)- the NY Aquarium at Coney Island was throughly devastated by the flooding and are accepting donations online here.

A little snipsnip

Mommy's messy haircut, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.
It cost me 2 lollypops this morning to cut Gibson's hair. It's not particularly straight or even- though it's not TOO bad. It'll cost me another lollypop to even it out- but I'm saving that for another day. I can only get him to sit still for so long (and strangely, sugar in lollypop form doesn't do much to encourage sitting still after a while).  He lost a LOT of length in the back, and I cut his bangs pretty short, but I still haven't given him a flat top- despite my family's constant telling me that I should (apparently all the guys in the Martin clan have the same hair cut...).

Things are going really well with him and his brother. When Ollie's upset he brings a pacifier or offers some of his toys (after all, when he's upset a car would TOTALLY cheer him up, why wouldn't it cheer up his brother?) and sometimes he just wants to be the one to sooth him. He loves to give him kisses and hugs and I only worry a little bit that he'll squish Ollie with his enthusiasm. It's lovely to see, and I'm awfully glad that he hasn't had any major setbacks behaviorally since we've brought Oliver home. It just reminds me how lucky we are that Gibson is such a good kid.

Brothers

Brothers, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

Hey all. I've been meaning to update this, but I guess you could say that I've been a little tired.... but Gibson is a big brother! And as you can see in this photo he is just THRILLED. We're all happy and healthy and home and as to be expected Mom and Dad are exhausted. More to come as things settle down.

Niiiiiiice baby

Niiiiiiice baby, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

We're entering the home stretch. Gibson won't be an only child much longer. He's going to be a big brother in just a few more weeks. I've been showing him my ever-expanding belly and telling him that there's a baby in there. So it's not uncommon for him to ask to see my belly (by saying 'Niiiiiiiice baby' - he says nice instead of please) and he'll hug it and give it a kiss. He likes to try and roll around on it too, but he likes to do that in general to people. Needless to say rolling around on an 8+ month pregnant belly/woman doesn't usually go over so well, but he's always sweet and affectionate towards me/the baby in the belly.

I can't really claim that he's excited to be a big brother, for all I know he thinks baby is another word for a fat belly and he just really likes to use it as a pillow. But he seems excited about babies in general when he sees them, so here's to hoping, eh? I've also gotten him a few books about becoming a big brother, as well as gotten him a little baby doll so he can have a baby of his own.

It's not been the hottest summer here in NY ever, but it may as well have been since I'm so big with child and exhausted and achey much of the time. So we don't get out too much. We did get to Coney Island this week (he was scared of the water! but loved loved loved the endless sandbox) (thanks to my friends coming to visit with their car and wanting to go to the beach) and we try to get to a local restaurant's Mommy and Me lunch so he can play (and eat free) while I get to talk to other adults and eat something super yummy.

He now pretty much refuses to sit in his highchair at the dinner table with us and will usually eat with us in his booster seat in a regular chair. He eats almost everything we eat, though being a typical 2 year old some days he decides he doesn't want to eat certain things he usually enjoys.

His vocabulary is expanding a little each day. And even if he's not saying quite as much as other children his age- he's most definitely understanding what we say and putting 2 or 3 small words together to get his points across.

I am looking forward to watching him become a big brother- I think he'll do great, but at the same time I'm cherishing these last few weeks when it's just him, my big mushy baby.

off we go, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.
Today we took a road trip to take a train trip... with Thomas the Train! And the part he liked most? Picking out that rock he's holding from the unpaved field the concession stands were set up in. Yup. We drove to NJ to get a rock!

Happy 4th of july.

Happy 4th of july., originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

What with me being exhausted all the time now and it being in the mid 90s outside, we've had a very low key 4th of July. Todd's putting together a new dresser for baby #2, and we had a traditional all American dinner of (Pat LaFrieda) burgers, fries and fresh corn on the cob. Gibson loves him some corn on the cob.

Old photos...

Since Gibson's birthday last week I've begun a new set of photos on my flickr website for his THIRD YEAR! (OH MY GOD can you believe he's already 2?!?) So if you're looking for any photos from his first 2 years you can find them here:
Year One
Year Two

There's not much in the latest set because lets face it, he's only been 2 for what? 5 days now? Anyway,  I'll be adding more as the days go on. So fear not, the 'photos of the boy' menu to the right there will be filling up with the standard issue adorable in no time at all. In the meantime enjoy the links above to take a walk down memory lane and marvel at just how quickly time passes.

How can you not want to cover this face in kisses?

its my birthday

its my birthday, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

I wanted to write an entry about how quickly these past 2 years have gone by, and what an honor it is being Gibson's mom. And how I can't believe what a big boy he's becoming... But he won't get off my lap and he thinks it's hilarious to try and lick my face (I think Todd taught him that game). So I guess in many respects he remains my baby. Perhaps I'll get a chance to write the entry I have in my head later. Maybe after he goes to sleep.

Happy birthday my darling boy.

With no help

With no help, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

He's getting really good at climbing up the chain ladder... and yet I still dread his doing so. That play structure is totally for kids twice or three times his age! Anyway, he climbs this himself, and has learned to control how fast he goes down the slide too.

(that noise in the background is a combination of traffic and running water from the sprinkler- which really exacerbates my pregnant lady bladder issues )

The mama song and dance.

The mama song and dance., originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

He likes to list the things he knows and loves... or just perhaps his favorite words (which are words for things he knows and loves)... Mama, Dada, Woosh, Truck.... Also, running around in a circle is awesome.

The best part of this is those headphones aren't plugged into anything. He just wanted to wear them. And beat box.

My mushy boy

Love, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.
Gibson is generally a sweet little boy. Don't get me wrong, he loves to wrestle and rough house with dad (and with other children given the chance) and play in the mud and dirt, but he is quick to give kisses and hugs. And he is cuddley and kind more often than not. He likes to show his affection for soft things by stroking them and hugging them and saying 'Niiiiiiiice' (it comes from our telling him to be niiiice to the cats so often) and though he has no real understanding of my pregnancy, he accepts it when we tell him there's a baby in my tummy. He shows interest in other children and babies and will say, 'Baby' happily (also of note, he will say 'Baby' when he sees photos of himself as well). When we ask him to say hello or goodnight to the baby in my belly he will wave at my belly or say 'nightnight' and often give my belly a kiss and try to hug it. It kills me every time! And when I'm at my most run down he will come over to me and give a hug and kiss and it really makes my day just so much better.

in the field

in the field, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

Gibson likes calling things by the noise they make. He calls the cat 'meow', his stuffed lion 'roar', his stuffed bunny 'hop', his rocketships 'woosh', and his stuffed owl 'hoo'. You get the picture, I'm sure. It's super cute. And he likes to do stuff and then say 'LAAAA' (which is kinda like 'ta-dah' for other kids) and I have no idea where that came from.

Swinging..., originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

Hey you guys, it's been really nice out. Sometimes. We've actually had a lot of rain lately, but in between the dreary days we've had a handful of absolutely gorgeous weather.

I can't believe that in just under a month my tiny baby will be turning TWO! TWO WHOLE YEARS OLD! IHe's got a wish list over on Amazon.com but there's nothing he desperately needs. And with another baby coming in a few months our spacious apartment will be filling up super fast. So here's to hoping he doesn't get anything too big or crazy!

Behold the power of bunny ears

no filter, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

The cat is out of the bag! Gibson is going to be a big brother in September. Todd and I are both very excited to be expanding our little family, and Gibson, well, he doesn't know the difference yet.

Gibson had his 21 month checkup last week and as soon as I relocate his most recent stats I'll update this blog with his latest numbers. From what I remember his growth rate has considerably slowed down (which is normal for this age), even though he SEEMS to be SO! MUCH! taller than he used to be. I think he only gained an inch in the past 3 months. Which really isn't that much.... His checkup went well, he charmed his doctor and didn't shed a single tear (there were no vaccinations at this visit, which totally helped). He's healthy as ever, hitting his milestones and developing like a champ. His next checkup is his 2 year checkup, and that just blows my pregnancy addled mind!

Sunny day

Sunny day, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

Spring's here! I can't believe how suddenly nice it is outside.

The time change has had little effect on our intrepid toddler. I think I'm more out of sorts by it than he is.

We're heading back out to the playground to enjoy a little more of the mild weather and late afternoon sun.

Here he is hanging out making animal noises. He opens by saying 'book' and ends by kissing the camera and waving good-bye, which totally makes up for him making an owl noise when I asked what a monkey says the first time!

Dirty boy

Dirty boy, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

It was another gorgeous day here in Brooklyn- with temperatures in the mid 50s and the ground mostly dry.

His interest in playing in the dirt still trumps the other children and play structures for now.

Nothing makes him happier....

We had another warm afternoon so I took Gibson to the playground despite it having rained overnight. By his standards conditions were perfect (for playing in the mud)! It's one of his favorite pass times. Needless to say it was bath night tonight.

Music class

Music class, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

I know it's been a while. It's been a mild but still too chilly to play outside winter. There have been a handful of days in the 50s which we (and every other parent in bay ridge) took full advantage of and ran to the playground and let the kids run free for as long as we could stand. Otherwise we've all been well. Happy, healthy, and all the rest of that.

Gibson is taking a music class on Tuesday mornings, which he absolutely loves. There are a handful of other children ranging in ages form about 18 months to about 3 years and really it's a sing-y dance-y bang on instruments kind of time. It's run by 'Music for Aardvarks' and all of the songs are city related and I highly recommend the classes, and our teacher Anna Banana is just wonderful.

Gibson understands us very well when we speak to him. If I ask him if he wants to go to music class or to the playground he nods and makes the same sound for yes (it's still not really english 'yes' yet). He says 'no' in quite possibly THE cutest way ever. It's so cute that I don't mind (usually) that he says no even when he doesn't mean it, or when I want him to do something (like sit down rather than stand on a chair). His vocabulary is growing daily, though a lot of the words are still a hybrid of baby-talk-learning-to-talk-english.

He likes to come over to me if i'm sitting on the couch and take me by the hand to lead me someplace (either to the kitchen for a snack or to his room to play). He doesn't have another doctor's appointment until the end of March, so no stat updates for a while. More soon, but for now I have to run to the market before it rains.
