cute tricks

Yesterday while I was on the couch Gibson picked up his Good Night, Gabbaland book and brought it to me read to him. Over half a dozen times! He's got a soft rocket toy that has smaller toys inside of it which he likes to bring to me to open up for him. I love that he is beginning to be able to express to me what he wants. He may not be speaking yet, but he's definitely making his preferences known. It's great to watch him move into this next stage of communication.

A few weeks ago he started giving kisses. They are sloppy open mouthed kisses without any actual kissing, but they count in my book. Sometimes they are a little more of a headbutt with an open mouth, but it's still so sweet. He started with only kissing me. Finally a week or so later he started kissing Todd. While at his birthday party over the weekend he quickly went in to plant a kiss on his cousin Brendan, and later gave one to his cousin Julianne. And best of all, right before his Grandpa was about to leave to go back to South Dakota he leaned in and gave him a sloppy kiss right on the cheek.

He really really wants to be eating what we're eating now. I don't know whether he thinks we're always eating ice cream (it's a favorite of his) but he definitely gives our food a try. And finally he's moved on from just pulling toys out of bins and boxes and has begun to put things back. It's not quite cleaning up after himself, but now there is a chance that I may not have to put away those toys he's taking out. He likes to shift them from one toy bin to another.

Tomorrow is his one year checkup so check back for his latest stats. And maybe I'll remember a thing or two that I wanted to include in this post.

make a wish

Dear Gibson,

I know that this may come as a shock to you if you read this when you're an angsty teenager and we're fighting over something stupid (most likely me not letting you do something totally awesome and cool that everyone else is doing), but your Dad and I, well, we love you more than anything else in the whole world. We are so incredibly happy that you are our little boy. We love watching you become a little person with a sense of humor and personality. You are an absolute delight to raise and it is an honor and privilege to be your parents. You may be a little shy when you first meet new people, but once that wears off you are quick to smile and are easy going. This past year has been filled with the very best of times, sleep deprived though it may have been. We couldn't have asked for a better baby! I made a wish before I had you.... I wanted a happy and healthy baby, and beautiful wouldn't hurt. Well, we had you, and you're proof that wishes do come true. So I hope you made a good wish before blowing out your birthday candles.... because who knows... maybe it will come true too.

Love,
Mom

he so loves his cat. We took him to the playground earlier in the day and nothing we did or saw made him quite as happy as this.

playing peek a boo

video Here's a little video of Gibson playing peek a boo with me. I love watching his sense of humor develop.

Also, he's been able to take at least 10 steps in a row a few times now, so I guess it means he's officially walking. I'm still trying to capture it on video.

sunny days and milestones

I can not believe that in just under two weeks he will be one year old! AN ENTIRE YEAR HAS FLOWN BY! My little baby boy will be one, although he's less baby and more little boy now a days.

We try to get to Prospect Park once or twice a week. (I'd go more if it were any closer or had anyone to go with me.) We spend a few hours usually under a tree and he crawls around in the grass getting dirt under his nails and on his knees. I bring snacks and a little water and it's nice to see the sunshine and watch the bigger kids running around. I'm trying to take advantage of the not-yet 90 degree weather while we have it, although the end of this week is predicted to be 95 here. So we're likely to be holed up in the air conditioning quite soon.

Gibson still hasn't started to walk on his own, but he's really itching to do it. You can see it in his face when he's standing on his own. But he's not sure he can do it yet so he usually gets into crawling position to get places. However he can stand up now without pulling himself up on anything. That's pretty huge for the boy. And he claps. Oh, it's so cute! He is generally such a happy boy. Always so quick to smile and babble a little to us.

I have decided to not do a big birthday party for him. Just a small family thing out at my folks' house. Grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins, that sort of thing. It's hard with friends and family being so spread out. For those of you asking after his wishlist you can find it here. However, he is only going to be 1, and we do live in a small apartment, and he has no real need of much of anything. He loves to flip through his board books and the rest of his toys he likes to just pull out of the toy bins and bang them together. He's still in that stage where everything is a toy to him, so it doesn't matter if he gets anymore proper toys, really.

He still loves his kitty cats. His kitty cats love him a little less so. He likes to pet them and pull on them and chase them around and around the coffee table. He's eating practically everything we're offering him (cheerios, assorted breads, ice cream, cheese, yogurt, melons and berries, carrots, bananas, pasta, chicken, beef). He drinks water through sippy cups as well as from a straw and cup. He loves splashing in the bath and being read to. I can't wait till his next checkup (which is at the end of the month) to find out how big he is. Right now he's wearing 18-24 month clothing, sometimes a 2T and if it's cut large and made out of a forgiving fabric he can still rock the 12-18 month size. I swear he's getting taller every day and he may actually be thinning out, like everyone's said he would now that he's more mobile and active.
