i can do it...

happy reading face, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

He's making giant strides towards independence lately. It's like he has NO IDEA that he's only a year and a half old and can't do some things on his own yet. Just this week he's shown great interest in books with real paper pages (rather than sturdy board books I keep encouraging him to read so as not to destroy the others) and he can turn the pages rather than just maul them. Last week he decided that he was going to climb into regular chairs (like dining or desk) and sit in them like a big boy all on his own. The photo accompanying this post is him in his rocking chair, with his Monster Mash book- perfectly illustrates his milestones because he climbed up into the chair himself with his book and flipped through it on his own. He's getting really good at saying 'hat' and 'hot' and waves 'bye bye' at things appropriately.

His next checkup (18 month!) is next week and I'll update this with the requisite stats. Also, Christmas is coming up and Hanukah is here.... We're hoping you're all happy and healthy and with the ones you love.

santa

santa, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

We went to see Santa at Macy's Santaland in Herald Square today. Gibson napped on the train, was patient throughout the 45 minute line, and thoroughly enjoyed the winter wonderland of animatronic things and toy trains. He was however, less impressed with Santa. To tell the truth he was actually pretty close to a cry by the time he got on the big man's lap but settled on a pout.

This has been happening more frequently lately, he's lulled to sleep by the relaxing motion of the swing.

Tis the season

Happy baby play time, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

With the holidays coming up some people have asked after a wishlist for Gibson. I have one over on amazon.com that I keep up to date with toys he doesn't have that I think he'll enjoy based on his development level and current interests. Nothing is needed. He is warm, safe, and well fed. He has toys enough to play with and would probably still find the banging of 2 toys together to be more fun than playing with them in their intended way. But if you truly want to get him things you can check the list and buy them right off the list online, or if you're not comfortable shopping online you can always shop locally using the list as a guide. Also, he still loves books and sturdy board books are always often played with. (All of the links in this paragraph lead to the same amazon.com wishlist)

If you're interested in picking out clothing (and who can resist the adorable stuff that comes in small sizes?) he is currently wearing size 24 months and/or 2T. Some 2T pants are a little long still, but surprisingly not by much and otherwise fit well usually. He can still squeeze into some 18-24 month clothing if it's got a lot of give especially if it's from a Children's Place (who's sizes run a little large) and he's currently wearing size 7 shoes. When in doubt, buy bigger! He doesn't particularly need anything, so if you want to pick out clothing, feel free to go crazy.

Coney Island Baby

Coney island babies, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

Thanksgiving was good, we spent it out on Long Island with my family at my brother's house. We hope that your holiday was spent among loved ones eating until you were uncomfortably full.

I'm happy to report that we spent black Friday not shopping. And today we took advantage of this unseasonably warm afternoon by going to the Aquarium at Coney Island. Gibson loved it. He was very excited to see all of the big fish. It's amazing to watch him experience new things. I always feel like the luckiest person when I get to see him giggle and smile.

Playground

Playground, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

Gibson has been showing more and more signs of his growing independence. For instance, while at the park this afternoon he really wanted to sit on this bench but couldn't get onto it himself, so he gestured and motioned for my help up. Then he clearly wanted me to go away and proudly sat and kicked and smiled and babbled to me. It's really wonderful to see. And, I won't lie, a bit exhausting.

October

We've been enjoying the crisp autumn weather here in NY. Our new apartment is only a block away from shore road park and its small but frequently empty playground. It's a great place for me to easily take Gibson out in his stroller (even easier since we've got an elevator in the building!) and let him run around. There are beautiful views of the Verezanno Narrows Bridge, Staten Island, and the water.

The apartment is slowly coming together. We're still waiting for Ikea to get the entertainment center parts back into stock so we can finish off our living room, otherwise we're in pretty good shape.

I think Gibson is working his way from two naps a day to one. It's making for some funny moments, and some trying ones. He gets so tired that he might fall asleep while eating, or he might have a total meltdown over anything. When he's not busy falling over he is having a lot of fun asserting his independence and doing things for himself. He's getting really really good at eating with a fork and is very interested in putting on his shoes. He still loves books and is learning to move things in order to climb on them to get to places he wants to go to. Soon there will be absolutely no stopping him!

sleeping vs eating

sleeping vs eating, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

Sometimes he's hungry, but he's also sleepy. And then this happens. And instead of me putting him to bed, I make a video. And then I share it with you.

You're welcome.

The big move....

It's been a long time since a proper update. But we've all been very busy. We are now all moved into our new apartment in BayRidge, Brooklyn. The apartment is large, lovely, and we're near friends with children Gibson's age. The move went well, and Gibson has had no trouble adapting to our new place.

He's really into Thomas the Tank Engine cartoon, and as always he still loves Yo Gabba Gabba. He recently decided that he doesn't want baby food and will refuse it if I try to feed it to him (he had been eating adult food for a while, but still accepting a jar or two a day as part of his meals). Now he eats almost strictly what Todd and I eat. He's getting more proficient with using utensils, but the majority of his food is still treated as finger foods. He just had pineapple for the first time this week and he loved it, of course. Oh, and he's got another 2 teeth, his top canines coming in. And it looks like his lower canines are not far away from joining the tooth party.

I'll update his stats as soon as I find his info card from the pediatricians, his appointment was the day before we moved so it's around here SOMEWHERE.... (from what I remember he's about a pound heavier than the last weigh in and an inch taller) We're mostly set up here in the apartment, but we are still in that living out of boxes stage. It's a challenge, but we're all doing well.

boy vs baboon

boy vs baboon, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

It's been a busy couple of weeks. Gibson has made it through an earthquake and a hurricane unharmed and oblivious to it all. We've been apartment hunting and since we found a place out in Bay Ridge we've been packing. We're aiming to do the big move at the end of the month. It's a lot to do, the packing and moving with a small child. But we're making progress and Gibson seems to enjoy the large boxes, so there's that.

We spent my birthday on Friday at the Prospect Park Zoo and wandering the park. After a week of rain it was a gorgeous and mild day and Gibson signed kittycat whenever he saw an animal. Also he's been saying "ah wa wah wah" when he wants water to drink. It's super cute.

He's making strides towards independence.... he's learning to feed himself, sort of. He likes to put peas on his spoon and bring them to his mouth that way, and it often works. That and his sudden interest in using things to step on/climb are examples of his coming to understand tool usage. It's fantastic and bewildering at the same time.

hey there

hey there, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

It's been a while since the last real post here, and for that I apologize. GIbson doesn't have another pediatrician's visit scheduled until the end of September so we'll have no stat updates for a while, though I swear just a few days ago he woke up an inch taller! He is no longer that super chunky little roly poly baby! He's turning into a real little boy.

In other news: He's learned to walk backwards! I have no idea if that's an actual developmental milestone, but it's pretty funny to watch. He also has taken a real shine to boxes. An large empty diaper box is just as fun as a tiny individual serving size craisin box. He likes to try out all different sized things to see if they will fit inside them. He will carry or push the boxes around and stack them and chew on them a little. It's a good time.

He's still a good eater and sleeper. He enjoys feeding himself an assortment of regular people foods, carrots, peas, corn, black beans, egg, crackers, every kind of cheese i've offered him, strawberries, peaches and nectarines, grapes, blueberries, bananas, tomato, pasta, chicken, meatballs, steak, and turkey. I guess the only things he hasn't shown an interest in so far have been salmon and lettuce. That's not too bad, really.

He's still working on getting more teeth. He has 8 right up in front (4 on the top and bottom each) and now he's working on his first molars (I believe the canines are supposed to be the last to come in), he's got 2 coming in on the top (one on each side) and 1 coming in on the bottom. It's made for an adventurous time sleeping lately (although he was a little sick earlier in the week with a high fever overnight which disrupted his sleep for a day or two as well).

There aren't many new photos of him lately because he is in constant motion and most photos I do take of him these days are blurry. Also, due to changes in the sharing capabilities of my flickr account the photo feed from there no longer appears on the right hand side of this webpage. I did manage to make it so the names of the photos from the Gibson set load, so you can click on them if you want to get a photo-fix, otherwise if you want to see what I'm taking photos of generally you can always plug http://www.flickr.com/photos/venusinfurs/ in a web browser yourself.

Peas please!

Peas please!, originally uploaded by Venus In Furs.

Gibson is really learning to communicate. He's still not speaking so much, but that doesn't stop him from clearly letting us know what he wants. Yesterday he brought a book over to me that has a photo of peas (to illustrate the color green). When I began reading he waited for me to get to the photo of the peas and then he started to sign 'more' and 'eat'. So I went and made him some peas. And it's not a one off trick, he did the same thing again this morning. He sure does love his peas! It makes me want to make flash cards of the other foods he regularly eats (or learn the signs for all of them).

post checkup checkin

The pediatrician's visit yesterday went well. Gibson got a clean bill of health and we were told he's pretty perfect. (Todd just said that I don't use the word perfect enough in these posts. This should read, "Perfect perfect perfect. Perfect perfect. Yesterday perfect. Perfect perfect, perfect. Pediatricians perfect perfect." ) It looks like his growth might have finally slowed down a little. He has only gained a half a pound, and 3/4s of an inch in the past 2 months. He's still a big boy though! He got 2 vaccinations and a TB test and he took it all like a champ. And now we don't have to go back for 3 more months (as long as he remains healthy).

cute tricks

Yesterday while I was on the couch Gibson picked up his Good Night, Gabbaland book and brought it to me read to him. Over half a dozen times! He's got a soft rocket toy that has smaller toys inside of it which he likes to bring to me to open up for him. I love that he is beginning to be able to express to me what he wants. He may not be speaking yet, but he's definitely making his preferences known. It's great to watch him move into this next stage of communication.

A few weeks ago he started giving kisses. They are sloppy open mouthed kisses without any actual kissing, but they count in my book. Sometimes they are a little more of a headbutt with an open mouth, but it's still so sweet. He started with only kissing me. Finally a week or so later he started kissing Todd. While at his birthday party over the weekend he quickly went in to plant a kiss on his cousin Brendan, and later gave one to his cousin Julianne. And best of all, right before his Grandpa was about to leave to go back to South Dakota he leaned in and gave him a sloppy kiss right on the cheek.

He really really wants to be eating what we're eating now. I don't know whether he thinks we're always eating ice cream (it's a favorite of his) but he definitely gives our food a try. And finally he's moved on from just pulling toys out of bins and boxes and has begun to put things back. It's not quite cleaning up after himself, but now there is a chance that I may not have to put away those toys he's taking out. He likes to shift them from one toy bin to another.

Tomorrow is his one year checkup so check back for his latest stats. And maybe I'll remember a thing or two that I wanted to include in this post.

make a wish

Dear Gibson,

I know that this may come as a shock to you if you read this when you're an angsty teenager and we're fighting over something stupid (most likely me not letting you do something totally awesome and cool that everyone else is doing), but your Dad and I, well, we love you more than anything else in the whole world. We are so incredibly happy that you are our little boy. We love watching you become a little person with a sense of humor and personality. You are an absolute delight to raise and it is an honor and privilege to be your parents. You may be a little shy when you first meet new people, but once that wears off you are quick to smile and are easy going. This past year has been filled with the very best of times, sleep deprived though it may have been. We couldn't have asked for a better baby! I made a wish before I had you.... I wanted a happy and healthy baby, and beautiful wouldn't hurt. Well, we had you, and you're proof that wishes do come true. So I hope you made a good wish before blowing out your birthday candles.... because who knows... maybe it will come true too.

Love,
Mom

sunny days and milestones

I can not believe that in just under two weeks he will be one year old! AN ENTIRE YEAR HAS FLOWN BY! My little baby boy will be one, although he's less baby and more little boy now a days.

We try to get to Prospect Park once or twice a week. (I'd go more if it were any closer or had anyone to go with me.) We spend a few hours usually under a tree and he crawls around in the grass getting dirt under his nails and on his knees. I bring snacks and a little water and it's nice to see the sunshine and watch the bigger kids running around. I'm trying to take advantage of the not-yet 90 degree weather while we have it, although the end of this week is predicted to be 95 here. So we're likely to be holed up in the air conditioning quite soon.

Gibson still hasn't started to walk on his own, but he's really itching to do it. You can see it in his face when he's standing on his own. But he's not sure he can do it yet so he usually gets into crawling position to get places. However he can stand up now without pulling himself up on anything. That's pretty huge for the boy. And he claps. Oh, it's so cute! He is generally such a happy boy. Always so quick to smile and babble a little to us.

I have decided to not do a big birthday party for him. Just a small family thing out at my folks' house. Grandparents and aunts and uncles and cousins, that sort of thing. It's hard with friends and family being so spread out. For those of you asking after his wishlist you can find it here. However, he is only going to be 1, and we do live in a small apartment, and he has no real need of much of anything. He loves to flip through his board books and the rest of his toys he likes to just pull out of the toy bins and bang them together. He's still in that stage where everything is a toy to him, so it doesn't matter if he gets anymore proper toys, really.

He still loves his kitty cats. His kitty cats love him a little less so. He likes to pet them and pull on them and chase them around and around the coffee table. He's eating practically everything we're offering him (cheerios, assorted breads, ice cream, cheese, yogurt, melons and berries, carrots, bananas, pasta, chicken, beef). He drinks water through sippy cups as well as from a straw and cup. He loves splashing in the bath and being read to. I can't wait till his next checkup (which is at the end of the month) to find out how big he is. Right now he's wearing 18-24 month clothing, sometimes a 2T and if it's cut large and made out of a forgiving fabric he can still rock the 12-18 month size. I swear he's getting taller every day and he may actually be thinning out, like everyone's said he would now that he's more mobile and active.

2 minutes at home

videoAs you can see nothing in the living room is off limits to him now. Every day he can reach a little further. He's fully mobile, though not walking yet. And he loves squeaky toys and his cat.

first mother's day

Todd and Gibson made sure that my first mother's day was special. They took me up to the Mohonk Mountain House (a short 2 hours north of NYC) for the weekend. It was one of the loveliest weekends I've ever had.

I wanted to take a moment to thank all our family and friends for thinking of me on my first mother's day. It was incredibly kind and it means a lot to me.

dare devil

He is increasingly interested in trying to stand on his own. And he's getting better at it too.

Friday, April 8, 2011

9 and counting

I guess it's been a little while since the last update. Time just keeps slipping away from me.

He just loves standing up. So much so that sometimes I can't get him to sit down. He can cruise along the coffee table pretty easily and even turn around to lean on the couch. He wants to stand up so badly that he tries to stand up even when there's nothing for him to hold onto- which ends with him in the downward facing dog position. He also takes little steps when Todd or I are holding his hands. His independent streak has begun to show, he likes to let go when he's leaning on the table. His face is always full of excitement and pride for the whole second or two that he can manage to not fall down. He wobbles and flails and either grabs back onto the table or me, or he falls on his butt (which is always preferable to falling in some other way- his noggin makes big booming noises on the hardwood floor).

He's sleeping pretty well at night, still in his own crib in his own room. More importantly for me, Todd's the one to care for him if he fusses, which means I'm finally getting sleep almost like I used to. He wakes up early, usually 6 am. And he's still a happy morning baby. He's eating stage 3 foods now, and he's happy to feed himself small bits of banana as well as gnaw on large chunks of apple or pear that I give him. We've introduced dairy- and he loves his plain yogurt. He's also a big fan of bread.

He doesn't have another checkup with the pediatrician until the week after Easter. So for now let's just say that his stats are: GINORMOUS and INCREDIBLY HEAVY. I can't believe he'll be 10 months old soon. Even more so, I can't believe he's going to be one! I'm trying to start planning a birthday party for him, but as anyone who knows me knows- I am a crap party planner. So we'll see how that goes. I know, he won't remember anything about it. But I'm just so excited that I really want to celebrate!

leaps and bounds

He's finally done it. He's managed to roll over from his belly to his back. He can now go both ways. I'm so very excited for him, although I'm a little less excited for me and Todd. Because this means quite officially that the boy is not to be trusted! He could at any moment roll right off the bed, or the couch, or those pesky cliff's I like to leave him on.

His eighth tooth broke through about a week ago. He's now got 4 tiny sharp teeth on top and 4 equally tiny sharp teeth on the bottom. His gummy grin is gone, replaced with a jack o'lantern smile. He's eating quite well still, enjoying his stage 2 foods that include an array of fruits, vegetables, and meats. Apples, prunes, raspberries, peas, spinach, green beans, squash, sweet potato, lentils, rice, tomato, chicken, and turkey and more. I've also given him a little bit of roasted chicken breast which he's eaten happily. He enjoys feeding himself things like mum mums and cheerios. He's oddly uninterested in feeding himself mushy things like banana chunks or fresh sweet potato.

He likes to drink water out of a cup through a straw, though given the chance he'll just dump the cup upside down in order to chew on the bottom of it. He likes to wave around a baby spoon and chew on both ends, ensuring meal times are a fair mixture of fun and food with a fair share of mess. He is a little bit anemic so the doctors added an iron supplement to his daily vitamin regimen, both of which he takes with gusto. And of course, he's still enjoying my nursing him.

It's a little crazy how quickly he's gone from just sitting up and playing to wanting to pull himself up on me and Todd. I can see in his face how much even this isn't enough and he's really trying to figure out how to get his legs and feet to do what he wants them to and move him to the next thing. It's like he's really beginning to realize that there is a world beyond his reach and holy cow! he wants to feel it, and taste it, and try it out for size.

He's just learning to get himself from a laying down position into a sitting position, and just starting to try to pull himself up on inanimate objects like the coffee table (which we've edged in ugly foam rubber for his protection). He's not managed to get himself to crawl forwards yet, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him do it any day now. He is still scooting backwards on the floor and has become proficient in pivoting around on his butt to get from one toy to the next on the floor. And he can stand supported by something, like the couch or coffee table, for quite a few minutes now. I expect him to begin to begin cruising in no time.

I'm also thrilled to report that Gibson has been sleeping in his very own crib in his very own room for a little while now. He's mostly outgrown the bassinet in my bedroom, and I think he's enjoying his larger more spacious crib. He's also beginning to wave at Todd and I. Sure, it's a floppy full armed sort of gesture, but it's definitely in response to our waving at him! Tomorrow is his 9 month birthday! I can not believe how quickly he's gone from a completely helpless newborn to an almost mobile little boy. I'll try to post a birthday photo tomorrow!

nom nom nom

He really likes to put things in his mouth. Also, he loves his shape sorter, even if he's using it all wrong. He spends a lot of time sitting up these days- on his own- playing with toys. He's very much into banging the plastic things together- making them make noises and seeing how each tastes. He's still not really crawling, but he can scoot around on his butt a little bit and is becoming more mobile every day. I guess that means Todd and I have to do some serious baby proofing!

Happy 8 month birthday

To my lovely boy,
This has been without a doubt the fastest 8 months in my life. Even so, I can not imagine my world without you in it. Your father and I are so deeply in love with you. I hope you always remember that where ever you go, you're carrying our hearts along with you.

All my Love,
Your Mother

Overdue update

It's been a very busy week for our little man. This morning he finally, without any prompting or assistance rolled over (from back to belly). Up until this time he had not managed to roll at all. If we set him up on his side he could roll either way, but hadn't shown any interest in doing it for himself. I figured he could, he just didn't want to. I had asked his doctors about it at his 6 month check up though, because I just wanted to be reassured and they were not concerned since he has been hitting all of his other developmental milestones.

Also, he's got three teeth on the bottom and he's now got three poking through up on top as well. Two popped through today! It's pretty exciting. He's eating stage 2 baby foods, including spinach and brown rice, oatmeal, prunes, peaches and mango, peas and carrots and apples. He also loves his MumMum rice crackers. I've let him try to eat cheerios, and while he can pick them up occasionally (go pincer grab!) he hasn't mastered getting them into his mouth. They get stuck to his fingers and while his hands make it to his mouth when he pulls them away the cheerios go with them.

He sits up on his own for quite a while now before toppling over. It's adorable to watch. He also likes to sway side to side to music while sitting. He particularly likes synthesizers and electronic music- anything upbeat and fun. He can kind of throw himself forward onto his hands and knees, but no real crawling has happened. He does sort of scoot backwards though. He also loves to stand with our help- on our laps and such. Gone are the days when he was completely immobile. I'm going to have to be much more mindful if I leave him some place for a few minutes.

He remains a generally happy and relaxed baby. He's quick to smile, and easy to make laugh. He loves seeing his dad come home, and is every day more fascinated by the cats which he reaches out and pets and grabs hold of their hair (which they will either tolerate or leave- they are very good with the baby that way). He has said 'mama' and now more frequently says 'dada' with wild abandon. And in the middle of his stream of babble this past weekend he quite clearly said, 'ohmygod'. It was just a coincidence that his babbling noises sounded like that (though I'd like to say that he is a prodigy), but it was unnerving to hear none the less.

He has his 8 month!!!! checkup next Friday. We'll get his height and weight stats then. But I'm guessing he's a solid 24 pounds and about 28 inches tall. He is after all, our little tank.

Three
It was three degrees this morning when I woke up. Fahrenheit. Without taking the wind chill into consideration. What a crappy kind of bitter cold to have to take the baby out into. But take him out we did. He had an appointment with his pediatrician for his flu booster shot. We put him in a long sleeve onsie, stripey leg warmers, socks, sweater playsuit over that, a snowsuit with footies and mittens and an extra hat to boot. It's days like this I think it'd be easier if we were just bundling him up to put him in a pre-heated car instead of walking blocks and blocks to get to the subway.

Twenty-three
He weighed twenty-three pounds and five ounces (with a little clothing and a diaper on) when the nurse weighed him this afternoon before his shot. He is SO! INCREDIBLY! BIG! He's not off the charts yet, he's actually in keeping with his 90% growth rate. It is not uncommon for babies his age to be 5-10 pounds lighter. This means he will only be able to use a bunch of his toys//seats/bouncers and such for a month or two longer. It also means that unless it is made out of soft stretchy material with a lot of give, he's wearing a 12 month size. It also means that he wears onsies with leg warmers more often than not while we hide out in the apartment from the cold cold weather.

Seven
He is seven months and two days old. It has been the fastest seven months two days of my life. According to his pediatrician there is no regular checkup scheduled for 7 months. So we won't get the full list of his stats. But he remains a very well humored, chubby baby. He charmed the front desk staff, the nurses, and the doctors. And he got his shot without a single tear. He didn't even flinch. Perhaps it's because his thighs are so darned chubby? Whatever the reason, it was awesome.

Oh, and he's got two teeth and it seems like there's another on it's way. Also, he has said 'mama' but I'm sure he has absolutely no idea what it means. However, I win! He said mama before dada! Sorry Todd.

One More For Good Measure

video A gentle squeeze of his chubby legs gets a giggle. We love to tickle the little man.

And now...

video I made this video last week. What a difference 6 months makes! He sits up, sure he wobbles, but he's getting the hang of it. He vocalizes and drools and smiles and is just the most lovely little boy. I could listen to him 'talk' all day long. As a matter of fact, I usually do. Also, do you see those chubby legs? Look at them!

Remember the time....

video At one month old, he had the hiccups and made the most adorable squeak noise. So I recorded a short video. He was just a little lump, incapable of communicating by anything other than a cry, unable to sit up or grab anything.... It seems like yesterday.

Not really about the baby.

Happy birthday to an awesome man, father, and husband. We love you Todd! Even when we're crying.

I'll post another update about Gibson soon. I have a post or two in mind, I just don't get much time to sit down and write these days.

We're keeping ourselves warm and busy with learning to stand (still no rolling over) and getting better at grabbing things. And none of us are looking forward to the snowstorm that is predicted for tomorrow.
