Christmas family photo

Gibson got a fantastic rocket from his grandparents for Christmas. He's a little too small for it yet, but we're very excited about it. We had a lovely day out on Long Island with my family on Christmas Eve and spent a very quiet day at home on Christmas. Gibson was a trooper through it all, especially considering that he had vaccinations and a flu shot on Thursday, was cutting his first tooth on Friday and had a bit of an upset tummy too.

We looked at his gums yesterday and lo! He's getting a second tooth already. He'll have a million dollar smile in no time.

He's decided he doesn't care much for bananas. Which is crazy since it was the first thing besides rice cereal we fed him. But he is still enjoying peas, sweet potato, carrots, prunes, and apples. He has also really gotten into trying to stand up. He's not really into the idea of rolling over, maybe he'll just skip straight to walking? He is getting to be such a big boy, so fast!

Merry Christmas

Gibson had his 6 month checkup yesterday with Dr. Saken and once again he got his regular vaccinations and we were told that he is a perfectly proportioned, but large boy who is in perfect health. He is in the 90% for height and weight! Also, he's getting a tooth! Right smack in the middle on the bottom. I was trying to come up with a witty way to include the song "All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth", but I haven't had enough coffee yet. I just wanted to post a quick entry to update his stats (see entry below) and hopefully get his photo with Santa up for his friends and family that might not follow my flickr stream. And to all of his grandparents out there, we're going to send you a copy. We'd have gotten it to you before the holidays if we'd been able to see Santa earlier, but we didn't have the chance till this past Wednesday. We bundled him up and took him into Macy's at Herald Square and he got to see the man himself. I have to admit that Macy's Santa was a bit bored by the entire thing, he had the look as if he was ready for his 3 days till Christmas to be over. But I'm thrilled that we were able to get the photo.

Adventures in: Eating!

My goodness how time is flying. Thanksgiving came and went already, and here we are with the full momentum of the holiday rush about to hit us.

Todd, Gibson and I spent Thanksgiving out on Long Island with my folks. We actually went out the night before, hoping to avoid some of the holiday traffic. If you've never ridden the Long Island Rail Road Thanksgiving morning, you're a lucky duck. It's a standing room only nightmare of Macy's parade watchers added into the regular holiday hustle and bustle. I will go to great lengths to avoid it, especially now that I have a baby.

The doctor at our last checkup told us we could start introducing more foods into his diet, so we went ahead that Thursday morning and mashed half a banana and gave it a go. I am happy to report that Gibson eats like a champ, and loved it.

We had a lovely day, with turkey and all of the trimmings. I ate so much at dinner that I could hardly touch the desserts. Gibson spent a while in the old family high chair at the table with us. But he's really just learning to sit up and isn't very good at it just yet, so he had to be held for most of it. But we have a highchair at home as well, and he's getting practice at being a big boy.

Last night we introduced apples. He eats it without complaint, but tends to make a face like he distrusts the first sour thing he's ever tasted. It's hilarious. Todd and I are thoroughly enjoying this new stage in his life. Maybe next week he'll try sweet potato!

Tis the Season

I've started to get questions from friends and family about what to get Gibson for Christmas? What does he need? What size is he? So here's your handy dandy link to his wish list. There's also a a link to it over there to the right under 'I Like Stuff'. There's a variety of things at a bunch of different price points on his list, but over all there's not a whole heck of a lot because he's really too little to need much or even realize he has much. Also we have such limited space in our apartment that we're trying to avoid having too much clutter. There are one or two larger, more ridiculous things on his wish list, but generally a few toys, a couple books, and your love are all of the things he needs this Christmas.

As far as his size in clothing goes he is just started wearing things in the 6 month size. The size 3-6 month things are just getting a little tight/too small. Keep that in mind while shopping, because he has a bunch of adorable things sized 6 months that have no sleeves or legs that he hasn't worn yet or gotten to wear very much, and now that it's gotten to be way too cold to wear those things it's breaking my heart. We've also got a bunch of winter-y sized 9 month things that are still too big for him (though he should hopefully fit into them come feb or march if he continues to keep growing at the same rate).

I think that about covers it. If you have any questions, or just want to talk about how big and awesome Gibson is, you can always give me a call, or drop me an email. We're hoping we get to see you this holiday season, and if not, then soon!

Another photo...

There isn't much new to report. Time is flying, our boy is getting bigger. And heavier (I can feel it every time I lift him up). His 5! month! checkup! is on Tuesday. I will update his stats after that visit, but I'm guessing he's over 19 pounds and a fair inch taller. He's been growing at a steady rate so far, though they say exclusively breast fed babies growth rates level off at about 6 months. So we'll see.

I know all the photos show a happy and smiling baby, but sometimes he does get cranky. I know, I know, but it's true. There is one thing that can make him quiet every single time.... The Itsy Bitsy Spider. It's like baby Valium or something. Todd will sing it to him over and over, quietly and sweetly. He may very well be the best daddy ever.

our civic duty

Today we went out to vote. Gibson got to learn about our civic duty first hand.

He also got to experience autumn. It's getting cold out there. It's not even 50 degrees, but it's sunny and bright and the leaves are lovely colors.

I bundled him up in corduroy overalls and a tiny fleece motorcycle jacket. I topped him off in a beautiful hand knit cashmere hat that my mother made for him. He stayed warm and looked stylish. What more could any baby want?

It's great to see him more alert and awake when we go out these days. He used to fall immediately asleep when we'd put him in the carrier and go for a walk. Now he spends much of the time looking around and taking in the sights.

Of course, as soon as we got home I laid him down and he conked right out because voting and looking is hard work.

A Gorgeous Day Here in Brooklyn

Today we took the little dude out for a stroll. We walked through the Park Slope Harvest Festival, which sadly had no activities for so young a baby. I'm sure Gibson will have a ball next year though! Pony Rides and face painting! Pumpkin decorating and a petting zoo! We decided to take a couple of sandwiches and head over to Prospect Park and enjoy the gorgeous early autumn weather. I was hoping to get a picture of us all together for maybe a Christmas card. But none that I took of the three of us were that good. I really liked this one though.

Laughing at Brendan

His cousin Brendan made Gibson giggle harder than anyone else so far. The giggle gold medal goes to him!

The Monster Mash!

Aunt Bernie and his cousins Julianne and Brendan stopped over this afternoon. They brought an adorable singing and dancing Frankenstein doll and an accompanying book. The doll boogies to 'The Monster Mash'. It's really cute. Cuter still is Gibson's reaction.

rainy days and baby faces

I was meant to go out today. But it was rainy. But my back hurts. But Gibson is going through a growth spurt; eating constantly and napping for short stretches of time. But the Iron Giant was on tv. But, but, but.

I am always looking for an excuse to stay in. All summer it was that I had a new baby and it was the hottest summer in recent memory. And so I didn't go out today. I didn't meet up with the mommie group I joined. I stayed in and read to Gibson. I'm only slightly regretful that I didn't go out and seek the companionship of other adults. I know that staying in is a hard habit to break.

But he is so lovely. And nothing in my life has ever made me happier. Gibson is the best thing I've ever done in my life. His smiles and giggles make me misty eyed with joy. I haven't even the words to fully express the love and happiness he's brought into my life.

Yesterday one of the shorts between films on TCM was an orchestra playing Strauss waltzes. I couldn't resist taking a quick whirl around the living room holding Gibson in my arms. And he smiled and he giggled and I whirled a little more, wishing I could bottle this moment and keep the feeling with me forever.

He is a happy morning baby. And every morning he greets me with grins and smiles and makes my morning so much better than I ever thought mornings could be. He is beautiful and sweet and I have never used so many 'and's in my writing before.

And I'm so in love with him. There are not enough kisses in the world to cover his chubby little face. I can only hope that he remains so very happy and will always remember how loved he is.

3 months!

I can't believe he's been gracing our lives for 3 months already. Time has flown so fast and he's getting so big so quickly. We are so incredibly lucky to have him, and we hope that as he grows up he feels the same way about us.

He's reaching developmental milestones left and right. One week ago he started sleeping through the night. Yesterday he realized he had hands and could clasp them together on purpose, as well as reach out for objects and grab them. He's not always successful, sometimes smacking himself in the forehead rather than reaching his mouth.... but he's working on it. His crooked smile has moved on to become a heart warming giggle. And oh, how those giggles slay me.

He is a generally happy baby particularly so in the morning. He makes it impossible to be grumpy because he is all smiles and giggles. Sometimes when I look at him I get a little misty eyed. But happiness does that to me these days.

His 3 month checkup is on Friday. I'll post his most current height and weight measurements after that visit. Right now all I know is he's a tank and he's growing like a weed.

I just wanted to say hello.

More meaty posts forthcoming.
